Credit Union held up

WASHINGTON — Officers from several law enforcement agencies are looking for a white male who robbed the Crane Federal Credit Union early Monday morning.

As of press time, no one has been arrested in the robbery but the Washington police department is closing in on suspects.

At 9:10 a.m., an employee of the bank at 2102 State St. said a thin white male approached the counter at the bank wearing sunglasses and a black sweatshirt with a knit hat on gave a teller a note and had a hand in his sweatshirt but did not show a gun. The robber then left the bank with an undisclosed amount of money and ran through the parking lot to a waiting Ford Explorer.

The Explorer headed eastbound on E. National Hwy. No plate information was taken, but a set of flip-flops worn by the robber was found at the scene.

No one was harmed in the robbery.

Washington Police and Daviess County Sheriff’s deputies were at the scene quickly as the bank was locked down and witnesses were interviewed.

One witness said she was in front of the robber in line at the bank, and saw him run away into the waiting Ford Explorer parked in front of neighboring Sav-A-Lot.

While the investigation begun, neighboring departments were on the lookout for the suspect vehicle. According to dispatch reports, several matched the description and were stopped in Martin County.

As a precaution, Pike County schools were in a partial lockdown due to the uncertainty of the suspect’s whereabouts.

Det. Trent McWilliams with city police said they are investigating several different leads but could not disclose much information without alarming suspects.

Anyone with more information can contact the police department at 254-4410.
