BLOOMINGTON — Charlotte Sue Betley, 79, passed away Thursday at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. She was born in Washington Sept. 30, 1933, to the late Ralph and Essie Leonard. Charlotte loved being outside, gardening and enjoying the sunshine. She was a fantastic cook and enjoyed cooking meals for her family, including Christmas dinner this year. She and her sister Patty went “thrift shopping,” or “junking” as they called it, every Tuesday and Thursday. Charlotte really loved life; she enjoyed so many life experiences. She was witty, funny and touched the hearts of many and always had something nice to say about everyone. Charlotte is survived by a daughter, Connie D. Roberts of Bloomington; a son, Frank Healy and his wife Maria of Bloomington; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Patty and Jerry Maibuecher of Skokie, Ill.; three sisters and one brother, Patty Campbell of Ellettsville, Juanita and Byford Carnahan, Jo Ella Nolley and Thomas Leonard, all of Washington; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; an extra special granddog, Dickens; and many nieces, nephews and their families. Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Charles and Loran Leonard, sister Harriett Mattingly, Hester Cass and Verda Gregory. Charlotte was a cherished and much loved mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She will be deeply missed but always remembered. A memorial service will be held at a later date. IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
