Lady Hatchets fall to Harrison on Senior Night

WASHINGTON — A Senior Night win over a strong Evansville Harrison team wasn’t on the menu for the Washington Lady Hatchets as the Lady Warriors left the Hatchet House with a 53-41 win on Thursday.

Washington (14-6) started strong, but saw a scoring drought stretch from midway through the second quarter all the way through the third quarter against Evansville Harrison (14-6). That span saw the Lady Hatchets go over 6:00 without a field goal as the Lady Warriors outscored WHS 29-19 in the second and third quarters combined.

Washington shot the poorly overall 14-43 (32 percent) and committed 17 turnovers against a Harrison team which brought a quick, tall, and athletic team into the Hatchet House.

“Against a team like Harrison, the difference between them and some other ball clubs, is that when you make a mistake against them, they score quickly,” said Washington coach Gretchen Miles. “We were up by four or five points, we give up an offensive rebound off of a free throw, and they hit a 3-pointer. We make a bad pass right before halftime, they turn it into two points and get the momentum. They really take advantage of your mistakes and capitalize on them.”

Ally Hunsinger led all scorers with 22 points, but found the going tough in the second half against a Harrison defense that began keying on her after the early portions of the game. Hunsinger recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds, while Audra Stallman added eight points and eight rebounds. Lupe Perez and Cheyenne Jones scored two points apiece to round out the WHS scoring.

Harrison, which was led by 18 points from Haley Woodruff and 13 points from India Davis, opened up a 40-30 lead after three quarters of play. Washington fought back, eventually cutting the lead down to five at 44-39 with 3:08 to play on a free throw by Hannah Mason, who scored seven points and pulled down nine boards for WHS. But Harrison held off the Lady Hatchets from the foul line, hitting 9-13 from the stripe in the fourth quarter.

Following the game, Miles paid tribute to her three seniors - Audra Lane, Mason, and Kristen Lundy - for their dedication both on and off the court.

“Tonight was Senior Night. We are very fortunate as coaches to have kids like that who play for our basketball team,” said Miles. “Not only are they active in the classroom and their athletics, but also in the community as well. And it’s important to see that those three girls have a very strong home life, that academics, athletics, and working hard at everything you do is very important. That’s just a reflection of who those kids are.”

A torrid first half pace found Harrison leading 28-24 at the half after the two teams were tied 11-11 after eight minutes of action. Hunsinger scored 14 in the first half, which saw WHS lead by as many four points late in the second quarter before a 10-2 Harrison run closed out the half. Washington shot 45 percent (9-20) in the opening half but the Lady Hatchets were hampered by 11 turnovers and 46 percent (12-26) shooting by the Lady Warriors.

In the reserve contest, coach Lacey Higgins’ squad finished at 11-8 following a 43-27 win. Carrie Lane led WHS with 13 points, followed by Izzy Waggoner with 10.

Washington will face the host Lady Wildcats in sectional action at Jasper on Tuesday.
