WASHINGTON —
The Washington Hatchets volleyball team took a step back Thursday night, but head coach Alicia Hand said her team is on the right track to their goal of winning at sectional.
The Hatchets (4-4) fell in three games 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 to the Jasper Wildcats Thursday evening at the Hatchet House.
Washington got off to a competitive start with Jasper and trailed 10-8 early in game one, but that was as close as they would get. Hand was pleased with how hard her team competed all night against a talented Jasper squad.
“I was very proud with how the girls came out and fought,” Hand said. “They lost the first one, but they went out and fought the second and the third. They never stopped fighting.”
Throughout the night, Washington seemed to gain momentum, but each time the Bobcats had a thorough answer to stymie the Hatchets.
“We have to remember that we have to get serves over, that’s key,” Hand said. “We have to get our service passes up to our setter so that we can run our offense.”
After falling Thursday night’s match, the Hatchets are back at .500 at 4-4 and Hand said each game is another test as they move toward the postseason. The Hatchets were led by Amber Taylor with six assists, Araina Fiddler with seven digs and Rachel Chattin with five kills.
“I told the girls it’s great that we played Jasper early in the season so that we know what to expect to get ready for sectional, because as we tell the girls every game we are preparing for sectional and that’s what we are working towards,” Hand said.
“Now we need to work on hitting around the blockers and talking more about what’s open on the other side.”
Despite the loss, Hand saw a number of things that she believes will help the underclassmen going forward.
“I was impressed with how Paige (Hawthorne) and Rachel (Chattin) really stepped it up,” Hand said. “We were talking and pulling the girls up and going up and hitting against the tall blockers. They never stopped hitting even though the blockers were there, they never stopped fighting.”
Hand has preached to the girls all season that if they continue to fight good things will happen and she has seen that thus far and she expects that to pay dividends sooner rather than later.
“There were lots of things that we told the girls we did well,” Hand said. “It was great to see them keep fighting, because that’s one thing we have really overcome since last season — keeping the fight, keeping the drive to win even if you don’t have the lead. You have to keep fighting.”

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.

In fan fiction, your favorite characters do what you want them to
When J.J. Abrams took over the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, he boldly went where the series hadn't gone before — romantically — pairing Uhura with Spock. Many fans disliked the change. Some loved it. Others didn't care, because they just wanted to see Kirk and Spock make out.
