Man injured in police action shooting

PETERSBURG — Monday night, at about 8:28 p.m., Pike County Sheriff’s Department received a 911 call regarding a domestic disturbance at 1012 Trafzer St., in Petersburg.  Within two minutes, Petersburg Police Officer Chad Tharp arrived and started to approach the residence when Michael Woodland, 37, exited from the front door carrying a rifle. Officer Tharp ordered Woodland to drop his weapon, which he had pointed toward the ground. Woodland failed to comply and started to raise the rifle toward Tharp. Tharp fired his service weapon striking Woodland.

He was airlifted to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville where he is currently being treated for serious injuries. Officer Tharp was not injured. There was a female and a child inside the residence when the shooting occurred. Neither one of them were injured.The female and the child’s relationship with Woodland are not known at this time.

Officer Chad Tharp is a five-year veteran of the Petersburg City Police Department.

This is an on-going investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
