Sinkhole reported in county road

Police Report

WASHINGTON — CITY REPORT

Thursday

9:30 a.m. ­ Shanon Abell, 102 Westwood Place, Apt. 2, advised her 2002 PT Cruiser was struck while parked in front of her residence overnight.

Wednesday

3:27 p.m. ­ September Barrett, 110 NE Fourth St., Apt. 3, reported a bike and scooter stolen from the residence. Descriptions were given.

11:46 a.m. ­ Alice Clark, 1109 E. VanTrees St., advised they had a grease fire and it was out, but it was close to the breaker box and they’d like the fire department to check on it.

8:38 a.m. ­ Ellie Meade, 1011 S. Meridian St., reported someone took a neon pink, black and white girls bike from the residence.

7:06 a.m. ­ Roger of Roger’s Grill, 2 SE 11th St., requested extra patrol at night. He advised items were missing from around the building and trash was in the parking lot.

CITY ACCIDENTS

Jan. 24

2:12 p.m. ­ Lonnie A. Edwards, 26, Loogootee, was at the stop sign on NE 15th Street at Memorial Avenue, facing north in his 2003 Ford Escape. Nancy A. Benjamin, 52, 915 NW Second St., was eastbound on Memorial Avenue in her 2007 Dodge Caliber.

Edward didn’t see Benjamin approaching and pulled into the intersection, striking the Caliber, which flipped over and came to rest on its roof.

Benjamin, who was using her safety restraints, was trapped inside the vehicle. No injuries reported. Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.

Jan. 22

2:02 p.m. ­ Ronald R. Young, 74, Velpen, was stopped for a stop sign at the intersection of State and NE 21st streets, facing west in 2000 Buick Century. He stated he waited on a vehicle to proceed southbound from the intersection, and after it went through, he proceeded and was struck in the passenger side by a vehicle that had been behind the southbound vehicle.

The driver of that car, a 2000 Buick Century registered to Sue Jones, 2910S 100W, was Jade D. Jones, 18. He stated that he thought he stopped and that he didn’t see the Young vehicle. Witnesses advised Young had the right of way and that Jones failed to stop as he moved up to the stop sign.

A passenger in the Young vehicle, Ruth A. Young of Velpen, was trapped in their car and complained of abdominal/pelvic pain. No other injuries were reported. Damage was estimated between $2,500 and $5,000.

COUNTY REPORT

Wednesday

8:14 p.m. ­ A caller from Plainville advised his garage was broken into and some items were missing.

7:06 p.m. ­ A caller reported an altercation at a residence on CR 550N. The dispute was verbal and a male was transported to Loogootee.

3:59 p.m. ­ Several people called in to report a large sinkhole in the middle of CR 725S. The county highway department was notified. The road was closed between CRs 1175E and 1300E until it can be repaired. Barricades were put in place.

3 p.m. ­ The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department was called to an alarm at 1416 N SR 57. There was no fire and they thought it might be a faulty system.

2:14 p.m. ­ A female was on station to report a case of fraud. She advised her credit card was charged $320.99 for a service she did not use.

12:32 p.m. ­ An employee of Chuckles in Odon advised an underage individual was trying to buy cigarettes and was sending others in to try to buy them for him.

7:00 a.m. ­ A caller advised a pole was down in water at CR 300S and SR 57.

REMC was contacted.

ARRESTS

David Burns, 36, Washington, was arrested Wednesday by city police for theft. He was released on $2,500 bond.

William D. Sweet, 52, Washington, was arrested by city police Wednesday for operating a vehicle while intoxicated/prior, OVWI/refusal and driving while suspended/prior. He was held at the Daviess County Security Center without bond.
