Lady Hatchets win 4th straight

WASHINGTON —

Jenna Legg scored two goals, assisted on a third, and Ally Hunsinger and Mikayla Richardson combined for a shutout to give the Washington girls soccer team its fourth straight win.

Legg and Ashlee Hayes both scored two goals to lead Washington to an 8-0 win against Boonville at the Sports Complex Wednesday.

Olivia Myers scored two minutes into the game to give Washington (6-4) an early one-goal advantage, one that the Hatchets wouldn’t relinquish.

After Myers’ goal, the Pioneers held the Hatchets in check for more than 20 minutes before junior Jenna Legg broke through in the 25th minute of play, putting her team up 2-0.

Legg scored her second goal of the night 10 minutes later. Thirty seconds after that second goal, Legg assisted on Washington’s fourth goal by sophomore Shawna Webb.

“She (Jenna Legg) gives it her all every time she steps on that field,” Washington coach Lauren Hannan said. “There are times when I think she could play three games in a night and she would be fine. She works so hard and goes after it, wants it, and that showed tonight.”

The Hatchets added four goals in the second half, two from Hayes and one each from Elaynna Brashear and Audra Lane.

The contest, originally scheduled to be a doubleheader of junior varsity-varsity matches, was changed to just varsity. Hannan played her junior varsity against the Pioneers varsity for the first 23 minutes of the second half.

“At the beginning, since this is a conference game and it is varsity, we wanted to make sure we didn’t lose, so we started our girls,” Hannan said. “As time went on, we wanted to get everyone out there since everybody showed up. I’m not going to make these girls show up and then tell them they can’t play.”

After a slow start, the Hatchets appear to be hitting their stride on both sides of the ball at the right time. Washington has not surrendered a goal during its four-game winning streak and scored 23.

“It just takes a while sometimes to figure out the chemistry on a team,” Hannan said. “I think it was this past Saturday where it really just connected. They played together and played to feet and you could see the quickness of the play. Everybody is just out here to win and out here to play. They realize this is the second half of the season and this is the last time all these girls will be together.”

The Hatchets have six games remaining in the regular season until the sectional. Hannan wants to continue on the path her team is on and that all starts with staying loose.

“The key that we have found is having fun and not pushing them to the point of exhaustion in practice,” Hannan said. “You can’t push them to where they are exhausted, because then they won’t want to finish out the season. As long as they keep playing the way they are playing, having fun and working together, they are going to go really far in the season. That’s the key to this team.”
