Apartment evacuated after meth lab fire

WASHINGTON — A Washington apartment building was evacuated late Wednesday night and Thursday following a meth lab fire.

According to dispatch reports, at 11:25 p.m., a female caller reported an apartment at Building 5 of Shepard Hills Apartments, 900 S. Meridian St., was on fire. Officers arrived first on the scene and found the fire out in Apartment 49, but a gold Saturn sedan was seen fleeing the scene.

Almost immediately, a meth lab was found in the apartment and the fire department and state police were called in the scene. The building was then evacuated.

All residents found shelter for the night except for one person, who was helped by the Red Cross.

At 12:19 a.m. Thursday, dispatchers from Knox County reported a deputy had stopped the gold Saturn just outside of Vincennes. The driver of the car, Shay Dee Arnold, Vincennes, owned the vehicle and also was renting the apartment.

Arnold, along with two others, James Holt and Tyler Jeffris, were taken into custody by Knox County Sheriff’s deputies when an active one-pot meth lab was found in the car, finished methamphetamine and a syringe.

All three were taken to the Knox County Security Center on manufacturing meth charges. Jeffris was also charged with possession of a syringe and felony possession of methamphetamine.

Another person, Amy L. Breeden, Washington, was taken into custody in connection with the fire for conspiracy to make methamphetamine and visiting a common nuisance charges. She is being held without bond at the Daviess County Security Center.

At 4:10 a.m., firefighters and police officers deemed it safe to return into the apartments, except the crime scene.
