North Daviess gets DCCF funds

ELNORA — For most school boards, meetings are when they pay funds. It is very rare when they receive funds.

Monday’s North Daviess School Board meeting was one of those rare times due to the Daviess County Community Foundation. The foundation gave the school a total of $3,614 in the form of several funds.

The largest, $2,336, was for scholarships through the Harold S. Lee Scholarship Fund. DCCF Executive Director Jeanne Fields said the fund was created by the late Harold Lee, to help the North Daviess community through the sale of his farm.

The Lee fund also gave another $1,000 for the North Daviess Dollars for Scholars program. Dollars for Scholars also received $141 from another DCCF fund. North Daviess’ FFA club also received money on Monday, $137 from the Nugent Farms fund. In the past 12 years, the FFA has received $4,023 from the fund.

Board President Bud Woodruff also noted the change in the program, remarking the board should have put the presentation at the beginning at the meeting. Fields has given similar presentations to most local school boards and other nonprofit organizations.

The board did get around to spending some funds Monday, specifically $13,500 for 25 new digital radios for buses and school personnel.

Superintendent Robert Bell said the Federal Communications Commission is moving the bandwidth for two-way radios in 2013, and believed it was time for a better communication system between school administration and the buses.

The digital system is compatible with the current analog radios and should last a long time, Bell said.

Personnel

The board approved the appointment of Rick Wittmer as fifth grade boys basketball coach.

Cellphone Policy

Board member Robin Dove asked High School Principal Jed Jerrels about the new policy allowing students to have cellphones in free moments during school. Jerrels said the policy is going well, but there was one instance of cheating with a cellphone.But, with education, Jerrels said the policy has gone well with students and faculty.

“It has been beneficial in some classrooms,” Jerrels said.

Bus Dispute

A parent commented during the meeting about bullying on one of the school buses.

The parent of an 11-year-old student said there have been threats and issues of violence on one bus and she believes it is an issue on other buses.

“I do believe there is a major issue,” the parent said.

School administrators said they have looked into the issue and sent home letters to all parents for one bus of students. They said they will continue their efforts.
