WASHINGTON —
MacAllister Machinery gave the city a nice treat for Halloween Tuesday as the company announced plans to expand.
The expansion at its current facilities in Washington, will create 61 jobs by 2016.
According to a release by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, the company will increase its building in Washington by more than 50,000 additional square feet. There is currently 38,000 sq. feet at its current location on the U.S. 50 bypass and CR 150S.
The company will spend approximately $8.9 million on the expansion, for sales, parts and service for Caterpillar heavy equipment and MacAllister Power Systems that include Caterpillar generators.
“It always gives me great pleasure to see a homegrown company like MacAllister succeed in Indiana,” Gov. Mitch Daniels said in a statement.
“MacAllister’s continued investment in Indiana will lead to more jobs for hardworking Hoosiers and shows why our business climate is the best in the Midwest.”
The company currently employs 100 in Washington and serves the local coal mining industry with Caterpillar heavy equipment.
“MacAllister was founded in 1945 in Indiana and has deep roots in the Hoosier state, with 20 locations,” President Chris MacAllister said.
“We continue to grow, and our presence in Washington for 28 years is based on the excellent local workforce that serves our mining customers 24/7.
“Centralizing component rebuild work from around the state in Washington leverages that excellent workforce and creates economies of scale.”
The IEDC will offer $700,000 in conditional tax credits and $100,000 in training grants provided the company meets goals in job creation.
Although not discussed previously, the Daviess County Economic Development Corporation plans to ask the county for additional tax abatements.
Local leaders were happy about the planned expansion.
“We are excited and grateful to MacAllister for this investment in our community,” Washington Mayor Joe Wellman said.
“The city is happy to help this expansion become a reality.”
The company is also spending $2.45 million in Evansville over the next few years, creating 50 new jobs in that area.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
