'Twin Towers' lead Loogootee

LOOGOOTEE — They are known as one entity, yet they are as different as night and day.

Loogootee juniors Michala Beasley and Christina Ziegler have been given the tag ‘The Twin Towers’.

The towers part is easily understood.

Ziegler is listed at 6-2 on the roster, while Beasley goes at 6-1.

“It started when we were sophomores or freshmen,” Beasley said. “We were always together.”

“I’ve had one of the young kids come up to my grandma and ask if her granddaughter was part of the twin towers,” Ziegler said. “Grandma  kind of said I guess so.”

Sure,” Beasley said when asked if it was appropriate. “Yes,” Ziegler added. “

The twin part isn’t that difficult either.

The twosome have played the sport together for five years. Beasley reached her height first. Ziegler caught up as time progressed.

“I was really tall pretty early,” Beasley said. “You (Ziegler) kind of shot up later.”

“In the eighth grade.” Ziegler said. “I have two pictures, and in one I’m shorter than she (Beasley) is. In the other, I’m the same height or taller.”

Ziegler’s start was through her older sisters (Joy and Caroline) who also played at Loogootee.

“I played volleyball at home with them all the time,” Ziegler said. “

“I always though it was neat,” Beasley said. “I went to a couple of clubs and camps in Bloomington when I was 11. The director thought I would be interested, and I’ve played since.”

Both are strong hitters who can achieve kills at all points of a volleyball net.

“I like hitting the best,” Beasley said. “I like passing too. It’s kind of grown on me this season. But, I do like hitting. When you get a really good point in the fourth or fifth game it really gives you some adrenaline. It hurts after a game, but you don’t notice it during the game.”

“I hit the ball more down than she (Beasley) does,” Ziegler said. “Our angles are really different. I like the ball a bit higher than she does.”

The Lions were faced with replacing their entire back row this fall after losing six players to graduation. While both Ziegler and Beasley have spent time on the back, it has been Beasley who has spent more time defending away from the net.

It’s a position that neither had played in the past.

“We had some problems at the beginning,” Ziegler said of filling the gaps from the graduated class. “Everybody has really stepped up to play. Everybody has.”

“When Remington (Wagler) got hurt, and Lauren (Bowling) everybody really stepped up,” Beasley said. Wagler missed a total of four weeks with injury and illness, while Bowling, the team’s liberro, has been out with a thumb injury. “I played in the back row a little bit last year. I’ve had to learn about playing on the back row this year. I was a little bit confused at times at first.”

Neither has really thought about who is the better player. It has really never come to their mind to consider it. And to them it doesn’t really matter.

“I’ve nver really thought about it.” Besley said.

“It doesn;t really matter,” Ziegler said.
