WASHINGTON —
The Washington Catholic boys soccer team started fast, and when it was over, they had their 10th straight victory.
The Class A No. 8 Cardinals (14-0-1) defeated Evansville Day, 11-0, on senior night Wednesday evening at Rees Field behind five goals from Colton Reed.
Senior Brendan Purdue got the scoring going early in the eighth minute of play on a rebound from a Blaine Fuhs’ shot.
In the next 22 minutes, Reed added his first two goals to give the Cardinals a 3-0 lead with 10:32 to play in the first half. Junior Blaine Fuhs added two more goals, including a bicycle kick bringing the Cardinals lead to 5-0 at halftime.
Washington Catholic added six more goals in the second half, including three from Reed and one each from Brantly Smith, Purdue and the third of the night for Fuhs. Coach Wayne Neace was pleased with what he thought was a total team effort.
“Our kids came out and played, they were finding that run out there today,” Neace said. “It was one of our better complete games. This team really is not that bad.”
The effort Neace got out of his team was something he is hoping continues as the Cardinals have one more game at North Knox before beginning sectional play atNortheast Dubois Monday.
“We want our kids to put the nail in the coffin,” Neace said. “They did it today and that’s what we have been trying to preach.”
Senior night is always a bittersweet time for players and coaches and that is no different for Neace this year.
He has coached many of the seven seniors since they were in sixth grade and together they have turned the Cardinal boys soccer program into one of the best in the area over the last three years.
“It’s going to be hard to see this group go,” Neace said.
“We have said all along that every year every team loses seniors. We just have to go back to the drawing board and take care of it. We’ve already rolled some ideas around for next year when we’re a little younger.”
Just as last year’s team was so proficient in the offensive third, this year’s team has been just as dominant in 2012. Neace said it has hidden some weaker areas.
“We’ve always told the players that if we can do that on offense, it takes a lot of slack off of our young defense,” Neace said.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
