SAFS gets new look

WASHINGTON — The Senior and Family Services building at 211 E. Main St. is sporting a fresh, new look thanks to local donors.

A grant through the GPC and REMC round-up programs allowed SAFS to get new signage and over-the-door dome awnings, according to SAFS Executive Director Jill Cecil, who said the community support is much appreciated.

“With the deep cuts in state and federal funding, we just couldn’t tackle this project at this time regardless of how much the improvements were needed, so it’s extremely gratifying to receive such generous support from the community,” she said.

While the new sign covers an unsightly line of holes in the building’s facade that someone once told Cecil made the building look like the site of a drive-by shooting, aesthetics wasn’t the only factor behind giving the building a facelift. Cecil said the new sign allows people to easily locate the senior center.

The new awnings will protect people from inclement weather as they enter and exit the building.

“These much-needed improvements are both aesthetic and functional,” she said.

Upstairs windows also recently were replaced in the building, according to Cecil. SAFS received funding assistance for that project from the Daviess County Chamber of Commerce Downtown Revitalization program.

“The windows are a big improvement,” Cecil said, adding they keep heat in during winter months and out during summer months. “We had leakage before. The curtains would blow in the winter.”

SAFS is a multi-service nonprofit agency that provides a variety of programs, including Med X-Press transportation, Meals on Wheels, adult day services, in-home attendant and homemaker services, Fitness For You, a women’s fitness center, and four senior centers. Opened in 1973, SAFS has only been in its current location since 2008.

“We’re open to the public,” Cecil said. “We invite the public to come by and see what we’re all about.”

She said there’s a computer room, game room and senior seminars among other activities. For more information about SAFS and its services, call 254-1881.
