Hatchets, Cougars head home

WASHINGTON — In a seemingly rare occasion, both Washington and North Daviess play on home fields for conference games today.

The Hatchets host Vincennes Lincoln while North Daviess welcomes Wood Memorial.

Washington

The Alices visit Hatchet Hollow, sitting in third place in the Big Eight with a 2-1  record in the conference and 4-2 overall.

The Alices haven’t put a lot of points on the board (92), but then they haven’t allowed many either (85).

“They are really just like us in the way they approach a game,” Washington coach Kelly Brashear said. “They wad up the middle with a wishbone mostly, try to keep the clock running and keep your offense off the field. I don’t know if they are winning pretty, but they are winning.”

Patrick Toole (5-4, 150 pounds) is the leading rusher with 405 yards. Brandt Nowaskie (5-10, 160) has 265 and Avery Mickens (6-2, 225) 204.

“It’s no big secret that neither team passes very much,” Brashear said. “And both teams have similar numbers of players going both ways.”

Trey Parsons (6-0, 185) returned for Washington after a five-week absence at Mount Carmel, Ill., last Friday, and he gave Washington an instant offensive boost.

Parsons gained 251 yards on the ground, completed one of two passes for 12, and caught a pass for 32.

“I thought we had some good blocking, but he also squirted through some small holes,” Brashear said. “He sometimes made the blocking look better than it was. He has such a great ability to move laterally.”

That helped Washington score 41 points, but the Hatchets allowed 60.

“We’re making way too many mistakes, both physically and mentally on defense,” Brashear said. “Our tackling needs to get better. It’s not just one thing, it’s a combination of all three basic positions.”

Washington is 2-4, but 0-4 in the conference. Any hopes to compete in the Big 8 washed away in the last two weeks.

“We’re working on trying to get healthier, improve and get ready for the tournament,” Brashear said. “I still believe our sectional is wide open with a lot of parity.”

North Daviess

North Daviess gave Class A No. 3 Linton one of its best games of the season last Friday despite a 35-12 loss.

The Cougars (2-4, 1-3 Southwest Seven) hope to have a better result as they host conference foe Wood Memorial at Cougar Valley.

The Trojans are 0-6 (0-3 conference). Wood has scored  59 points and allowed 287.

“It took awhile to get our game plan going, but I thought we settled into our game plan in the second quarter,” Cougar coach Scott Helms said of the game with the Miners. “I thought it was pretty even after that.”

Helms said his team would have to defend against a team that is capable of running and throwing. Junior Sam Trader (5-9, 175) played well against North Daviess, and Helms said he is a back to watch.

“He’s a good back and an outstanding receiver,” Helms said.

Helms believes his team is becoming healthy again, and is hoping the Cougars can get back on the winning way.
