WASHINGTON — Betty Louise Shields, 87, of Washington, died at 6:02 p.m. Monday at her residence. Born Jan. 15, 1925, in Crawford County, she was the daughter of Guy Everett and Hazel Bertha (Dillman) Melcom. A graduate of Leavenworth High School, she was a saleslady at Locker Grocery for several years and later at Buehlers Grocery. She was baptized at First Christian Church and also attended First Church of God. She was a member of the Dorcas Society of the church and the D.F.O. Sunday school class. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Richard Cook of English; a son, Terry G. Shields of Washington; grandchildren, Richard Cook Jr., Tracy Tomlin, Jennifer Cook, and Karmen Hunter; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Melcom of Corydon; a daughter-in-law, Debra Shields of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Charles E. Shields, whom she married Nov. 17, 1944, died Aug. 31, 1983. Also deceased are one sister, Lucille Asher, and one son, Roger Shields. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Gill Chapel, with Bro. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will be in English Cemetery at 2 p.m. Visitation is from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to Helping Hearts Hospice.
