Crooks, Bucshon readies for Crane forum

Debate scheduled for Oct. 24

CRANE — Debates and forums are shaping up between 8th District Congressional candidates Larry Bucshon and Dave Crooks.

On Oct. 11, the newly-christened WestGate Academy Conference and Training Center will play host to a forum for the two candidates from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the center.

The forum will focus on national security, a topic near to the mission of NSWC Crane and the WestGate @ Crane Tech Park.

Both the incumbent Buchson, R-Newburgh, and Crooks, D-Washington, will be in attendance.

Each candidate will give a presentation on their positions relating to national security in the 8th District. Following their presentations, questions on national security issues will be solicited from the audience.

The idea, according to Alex Jackson of Stimulus Engineering, was formed from an idea by Stimulus President Tim Wagler.

“He believed Crane would be the perfect location for an educational forum on national security,” Jackson said.

But there was not a place for the candidates and the general public to have a forum close to NSWC Crane. Enter the WestGate Academy, which will officially cut the ribbon later.

Both candidates said Wednesday they look forward to attending, Jackson said.

Crooks, who was the base’s state representative for 12 years, said his father used to work there and he has testified in support of the base before Congress.

“National Security is one of my top concerns, and in addition to having a chance to discuss the issues critical to the security of our country, I’m also looking forward to hearing directly from the people who work day in and day out in support of the war fighter,” Crooks said.

Bucshon, in his role as representative, has hosted events and speakers at the base and continually helps with Crane matters.

“(Dr. Bucshon’s) work on the completion of I-69 and economic development of the area proves he understands the important role Crane plays in southwest Indiana and the important role Southwest Indiana plays in the security of our nation,” the congressman’s campaign representative said. “He is looking forward to the opportunity to engage in a meaningful conversation about issues important to this region.”

The event is sponsored by the WestGate Academy and Crane Federal Credit Union.

As for other speaking opportunities before the election, the Knox County League of Women Voters will host a televised debate at 8 p.m. on Oct. 24.

According to a release from Vincennes University, the debate will be broadcast on WVUT-TV and WVUB-FM and on VU’s website, www.vinu.edu.

Libertarian candidate Bart Gadau will also be in attendance. There is no seating for the debate, but viewers can send in questions to the league at www.lwvknoxcounty.org or by calling (812) 890-3903.
