Woman arrested on child pornography charges

WASHINGTON — A Washington woman was arrested Friday for charges of child pornography.

Alana McFarland, 20, 110 W. Oak St., was taken into custody by city police on a warrant after pornographic photos were found on a cell phone belonging to her.

According to the probable cause affidavit, officers were first notified on Jan. 14, after a person found the cell phone at an apartment at Shepherd Hills. The person then told officers the phone was McFarland’s and they believed it contained child pornography.

Officers then looked at the photos and they saw a female approximately 7 years old and an adult male having intercourse.

The phone was taken into custody and McFarland was first contacted by telephone. She told officers she was not aware of the photos and said a 17-year-old male had used the phone before.

A day later, McFarland was interviewed at the station, along with her mother. She again denied knowing how the photo got on her phone, but admitted she used the phone to visit pornographic websites. Her mother then told officers McFarland did download other photos of nude juvenile females about three to four weeks prior. When the mother told McFarland it was illegal to have the images, she then deleted them.

Officers also interviewed the 17-year-old male, who had dated McFarland. He denied taking the phone, other than to call his mother.

He also denied seeing any photos on the phone or any images on McFarland’s computer that looked like child pornography.

According to court records, McFarland had no other criminal charges other than a 2011 infraction for operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license.

The charge was later dropped after she entered a pre-trial diversion program.

McFarland is being held at the Daviess County Security Center on $7,500 bond. No attorney has been assigned or retained in McFarland’s defense.
