Teenager dies in 1-car accident

NDHS open at 1 p.m. for students, staff and community

ODON — The North Daviess community is mourning Saturday following the death of Samantha Porter, 17, in a one-car accident Friday night.

According to a release from the Daviess County Sheriff's Department, Porter, Odon, was eastbound on CR 1200N, just east of CR 950E, when she apparently lost control of her vehicle while attempting to avoid a cat in the roadway.

The vehicle, a 1999 Mercury Cougar, then went off the north side of the road and collided with a utility pole at the driver's side door. Porter was not wearing her seatbelt at the time and suffered massive head trauma.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Chris Coney. Assisting at the scene of the accident were the Odon Police Department, Coroner's office, Odon-Madison Volunteer Fire Department, Southwest Medical EMS and Duke Energy.

Porter, a senior, was a cheerleader for North Daviess High School. She was the daughter of Dr. Bryan and Ginger Porter of Odon.

North Daviess High School will be open at 1 p.m. today, according to Principal Jed Jerrels, for students, staff and the community.
