Castle eliminates Hatchets, 1-0

BOONVILLE —  Single-goal games had treated Washington pretty well during the regular season, but a 1-0 decision against Castle Wednesday in the Boonville Sectional went against the Hatchets.

Washington had defeated Castle by the same score in the regular season, but a header by the Knights in the second half proved to be the difference.

Both squads opened the game cautiously, feeling the other to anticipate play.

Neither had a serious scoring chance in the opening seven minutes before Washington’s Austin Ghirardelli nearly penetrated the Castle goal eight minutes in. But Castle goalkeeper Mitch Powers made the save.

Washington goalkeeper Tyler Seibert returned the favor two minutes later, grabbing a loose ball in front of the Hatchet goal. Castle had found the chance, but Seibert was in the right place a the right time.

Washington’s Luke Raymond also nearly found the Castle goal three minutes later on a 20-yard dipping shot that just missed the crossbar.

The first corner was to Castle just under the 27-minute mark of the opening half, but the Knights were unable to take advantage.

Powers then rose to the occasion again on a 23-yard kick, that led to a Castle counterattack. Neither attempt made it through.

Washington again challenged Powers as Raymond found Austin Bush who passed to Francisco Rodriguez.  But the shot was wide.

Cullen Arnold cleared a ball in front of the Washington goal, and Castle soon looked for the match’s first score. But Seibert again made a save on a shot headed to the top of his net, as the match entered its last quarter of the opening half.

The Knights were called for a tripping foul with 4:30 left in the half, but Washington’s attempt to set an offensive play was stalled.

Castle had spent much of the opening half playing back in their end, and the Hatchets had problems penetrating the often times congestive defense.

But the Hatchets found their way to a corner kick with 18 seconds remaining in the half. The Hatchets were able to put the ball in play with 10 seconds to play, but the kick was controlled by the Knights and the first half ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Knights had the first opportunity of the second half, but Seibert stopped that chance in the opening two minutes.

Castle got its goal with 25:43 left to play on a header after Seibert was forced to leave the line on a shot.

Austin Bush then had a one-on-one opportunity that led to a Washington throw in.

Cullen Arnold tried a header, Derek Gress followed as did Luke Raymond, but the Knights defended.

That was quickly followed by a run from Bush at the halfway point that led to a shot just right of the Knight goal.

Seibert grabbed a hanging shot from a Castle free kick with 17 minutes to play.

Bush and Arnold had opportunities late in the match, as did Rodriguez and Wilfo Serrano. But the Knights were packing players deep on defense, making opportunities hard to find.

Bush was injured in a collision with several players with 5:53 remaining. Bush remained down for several minutes before being assisted from the field.

Washington brought their players into the offense as time wound down. Ghirardelli tried to find Arney with 2:39 to play, but Powers stopped that effort.

The Knights received a yellow card after the stop for taking too much time.

Washington tried to press the issue, but were unsuccessful.

Castle now faces Evansville North at 6 p.m. Saturday for the championship. North defeated Evansville Central, 4-0, earlier.
