Michael Bird

June 6, 1940 - July 18, 2012

LOOGOOTEE — Michael D. Bird, 72, died at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Loogootee. Born June 6, 1940, in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of Otto and Evelina (Polk) Bird. He was a 1957 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School in South Bend. A 1961 graduate of Notre Dame University, he received his master’s degree in education from Indiana University in 1986. He joined the Navy in 1962 and went to Officer’s Candidate School in Newport, R.I., and went on to serve in Japan. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War where he served on the LST Washtenaw County 1166. After serving in the Navy, Michael lived in Oakland, Calif., Bellevue, Wash., and Santa Ana, Calif. In 1975 he moved to Shoals and in 2000 moved to Loogootee. Since 1998 he managed the Lakeview Golf Course north of Loogootee, and prior to that he taught at the Indiana University Student Academic Center in Bloomington. He is survived by his wife, Diane V. (Dickerson) Bird, whom he married Aug. 18, 1962; two sons, Martin Daniel Bird of Noblesville and Eric Jonathan Bird of Odon; two daughters, Michele Suzanne Bird of St. Louis, Mo., and Danielle Catherine Voeller of Kirkland, Wash.; four brothers, Bill Bird of Prescott, Ariz., Tony Bird of Noblesville, Chris Bird of Ashland, Ore., and Barry Bird of Rockville, Md.; three sisters, Kate Bird of Frederick, Md., Evie Haas of Mequon, Wis., and Sarah Peczkowski of South Bend; and grandchildren, Lucas Bird, Ian Bird, Naomi Voeller, Leah Voeller, Jane Voeller and Sheryl Flasch. He is preceded in death by his parents. There will be a Celebration of Life service at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Brocksmith-Blake Funeral Home in Loogootee.
