MONTGOMERY — The referendum for Barr-Reeve Schools is proceeding on schedule, according to school leaders.
During Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Travis Madison said the state Department of Local Government Finance has approved the referendum question for vote on May 7.
Madison also said he and school officials will sit down with the county election board to discuss the mechanics of the referendum vote.
The vote would create an additional property tax for homeowners in Barr and Reeve townships for the next seven years. The money from the tax, school leaders have said, will be enough to keep Barr-Reeve schools intact.
Madison said he has continued meeting with groups and individuals about the proposed referendum. A page with information about how the funds will be collected and used will be up on the school’s website, www.barr.k12.in.us, today.
“We will still be getting as much information out there as possible,” Madison said.
Meanwhile, those who want to vote and are not currently registered to vote can pick up forms at the corporation offices in Montgomery and at the Daviess County Courthouse. If one is currently registered to vote in state and local elections, he or she does not need to register to the special election.
Deadline for registration is April 8.
School security
Madison informed the board more cameras have been installed at both the high school, intermediate and primary buildings, in response to increased measures following the Newtown school massacre in December. Some work is being finalized with the new systems.
The increased measures include electronic locks and a buzzer system where visitors will have to be let in by school personnel. Cameras were also discussed to be put in the parking lot and the bus barn.
“Overall, it adds to the safety of our buildings,” Madison said.
Calendar
The board passed the 2013-14 school calendar. School will start on Aug. 8 and is set to end on May 22. New to the calendar this year will be a school-wide moratorium period from July 26 to Aug. 4. No school sports will practice or have camps during that period. The IHSAA has instituted its moratorium from June 30 to July 6 where no teams can practice or have camps.
Madison said the school moratorium was instituted for parents to schedule summer vacations around summer practice schedules.
Personnel
In personnel matters, the board approved to appointment of Matt Anderson as varsity golf coach. Also, Mandy Hannah was appointed as a consultant for the junior class prom. The current class sponsors will donate a portion of their salary to Hannah for her assistance.
