Washington boys and girls 2nd in Loogootee meet

LOOGOOTEE — Washington cross country coach Dave Harman was hoping to see where his team stood as they prepare for the Boonville Invitational on Saturday, and after placing second in boys and girls Monday evening he is pleased with the direction his team is headed.

The Hatchets finished second to South Knox  overall in both boys and girls as the host school, Loogootee finished third and North Knox fourth at the meet at West Boggs Park.

South Knoxfinished first in the boys race with a score of 29, Washington finished second with 44, followed by Loogootee with 109 and North Knox with 150. Andrew Scaggs, of South Knox finished first overall with a time of 16:35.

South Knox won the girls race also, with a score of 25 as Washington finshed second with a score of 40, followed by North Knox with a score of 56 and Loogootee didn’t have enough runners to score.

Harman said he was impressed with the progression of first-year runner Logan Sipes after Sipes finished third overall for boys with a time of 17:11 on the 3.12 mile course.

Sipes had previously run track and Harman wasn’t sure how he would adapt to the difference in terrain, but thus far there have been no issues.

“He’s (Sipes) an excellent track runner, but I just didn’t know how he would be on a cross country course and it’s not flat,” Harman said. “A big thing with the younger runners is figuring out how to run.”

Harman was pleased with the results of his team overall on the hilly terrain at West Boggs, which is a change from the flatter courses they are accustomed to running.

“We try to work that in in our training during the week, because on Thursday we ran a rather large hill,” Harman said.

Loogootee coach Adam Tompkins was surprised at how fast the pace on the course was and especially the pace of Lions’ Zach Wagler, who finished second overall with a time of 16:47.

“He has improved greatly from last year, his time last year was 18:30 on this course,” Tompkins said. “I’m not sure what the old course record was, but that time (16:47) is the current course record by a Loogootee athlete on this course.”

Washington had the top two finishers on the girls side with Madison Decker and Brandy White finishing with times of 20:19 and 21:50 respectively. Harman noted that Decker, who was a state finalist a year ago as a freshman, wasn’t pleased with her finish at West Boggs, where she hadn’t run previously.

“I’m not too sure how Madison (Decker) is running yet, but we’ll see on Saturday at Boonville,” Harman said. I think she’s a little worried, but it’s still early in the season and we still got a long season to go. I think we’ll wait to see what happens on Saturday. She did really well there as a freshman, and that’s the first real gauging point.”
