WASHINGTON — Virginia L. Shake, of Washington passed away Wednesday in Indianapolis. She was 91. She was born in Decker on Jan. 12, 1921, the daughter of Raymond P. and Minnie (Lane) Johnson. She married Delmon A. Shake on May 11, 1940. Together they owned and operated for many years Shake’s IGA grocery store on West Walnut Street in Washington until 1960. They traveled each of the 50 states in the union and also took several trips abroad. For 23 years she worked as a hairdresser in her own hair salon from 1961 until she retired in 1984. Virginia was an avid card player and enjoyed the companionship of her fellow card club members. She was an outstanding cook and took great pride in entertaining family and friends. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Washington, a graduate of Washington High School, a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and member of Eastern Star Chapter 210. She is survived by her sister Patricia A. Snyder of Indianapolis; nieces and nephews Charles Mize of Missouri, Mary Johanningsmeier of Florida, Ray Furney of Lawrenceburg, Donna McCloskey, Rae Greene, and Jim and Jeff Chandler, all of Loogootee, Natalie Smith, Janelle Purdue, Kirk Shake, all of Washington and Dale A. Shake of Martinsville; and many great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-great-nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Preceding her in death were her parents; her beloved husband Delmon in 1997; a sister, Norma Mize; a brother, Raymond Johnson Jr.; and one nephew, Randy Johnson. Visitation for Virginia L. Shake will be Friday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at Gill Funeral Home in Washington. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m., with Rev. Tim Baxter officiating. Graveside services will follow at Sugarland Memory Gardens.
