WASHINGTON —
Senior Night at Hatchet Hollow was a happy one for the home team as Washington closed out the regular season with a 48-21 win over North Knox on Friday.
No senior was bigger for Washington (3-6) than running back Trey Parsons. Parsons finished with 378 yards on 25 carries and five touchdowns against North Knox (4-5). Parsons demolished his own school record of 327 yards in a game, set last season at Vincennes.
“I took Trey aside before the game and said ‘Listen, this is your last regular season home game, go out and leave something out here for people to remember,’” said Washington coach Kelly Brashear. “And he did. His field vision was very good, he broke off some long runs, and when he gets in the open field, not too many people are going to catch him.”
The performance was one Brashear saw coming during the week as a Hatchet squad that had been banged up for weeks finally got healthy and had good week of practice.
“It’s always good to win. We built some momentum tonight for next week and a much improved Pike Central team,” said Brashear. “I thought we got better this week in practice. We had the best week of practice in several weeks this week. I felt good from a head coaching standpoint because the kids were upbeat, they had that fire in practice.”
The first half was dominated by big plays, mostly courtesy of Parsons. Parsons opened the scoring with a 78-yard scoring run less than four minutes into the contest, then added runs of 47 and 37 yards respectively on the way to a 211 yard half on 13 carries. The 47-yard run set up a one-yard carry by fullback Tyler Edmiston for a 14-0 Hatchet lead late in the first quarter, and the 37-yard jaunt went for a touchdown, staking WHS to a 21-0 lead with 9:28 left in the second quarter.
North Knox dented the scoreboard on a one-yard plunge by Brennen Duke on fourth and goal with 7:25 left in the half. That run was set up by a 62-yard pass from Warrior quarterback Jordan Meurer to Brett Ridgway that moved North Knox to the Hatchet nine.
Parsons added touchdown runs of three and 28 yards in the third quarter and a 19-yard scoring run in the final period, while quarterback Jake Brashear scampered 66 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Hatchet offense gained 518 yards on the ground.
Washington’s defense turned in one of its better performance’s of the season, holding North Knox to 290 yards. Big plays on for the WHS defense included fumble recoveries by Kirk Crecilius and Eli Betancourt, interceptions by Tyler Walls, Hunter Potts, and Kyle Pfender, and a blocked extra point by Parsons.
North Knox picked up touchdowns in the second half from Wacey Robertson (17-yard reception) and Duke Brennen (seven-yard run).
The contest was the final regular season home game for 13 Hatchets seniors, who were honored prior to the game. Seniors honored included Parsons, Betancourt, Edmiston, Trey Burris, Shawn Feng, Trey Graber, Jalen Madison, Cody Milligan, Brody Padgett, Pfender, Potts, Breighton Tolliver, and Walls.
Washington will host Pike Central in first round sectional action on Friday.

This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year.
