Bicknell man arrested on meth charges

EDWARDSPORT — Paul Ryan Russell, 31, of Bicknell, was arrested by Edwardsport police on a variety of charges early Sunday morning.

When Marshal Ryan Johanningsmeier and Deputy Marshal Kevin Abrams attempted to stop Russell for committing a traffic offense on J & R Road at approximately 12:30 a.m., he fled, crashed his moped  on Pine Bluff Road and then took off on foot. Deputy Marshal Abrams secured the crash scene and, after a short foot chase, Marshal Johanningsmeier caught Russell.

Abrams, along with Bicknell police officers, discovered several toxic materials used to make methamphetamine, including anhydrous ammonia, crushed ephedrine pills, organic solvent and lithium ion batteries. The Knox County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the investigation.

Russell was processed into the Knox County Jail on felony charges of manufacturing methamphetamine, illegal drug labs, dumping controlled substance waste, possession of paraphernalia, resisting law enforcement and theft, and misdemeanor charges of improper handling of anhydrous ammonia and refusal to provide identifying information. He also was cited for infractions of driving while suspended, driving while not registered and failure to signal a left turn. He’s being held on $25,000 cash-only bond
