LOOGOOTEE —
The Barr-Reeve volleyball team won its opening match of the postseason, but it wasn’t easy.
The Vikings defeated North Daviess in three consecutive sets, 25-18, 25-16, 25-21, to advance to the semi-finals of the Loogootee sectional.
The Cougars (23-11) got off to a fast start taking a 9-3 lead before the Vikings could get settled. The Class A No. 1 Vikings (32-2) responded with nine straight points to take the lead 12-9. North Daviess kept the pressure on, but they eventually fell by a seven-point margin. Despite winning the opening match, Barr-Reeve head coach Amber DeCoursey was not pleased with the output from her team to start the sectional.
“I didn’t think we came out with much focus or energy, which led to us being slow on the floor,” DeCoursey said. “Give North Daviess credit. They dug a lot of balls, they came back at us. I was just very disappointed in our energy start to finish in the game.”
The Vikings responded in the second set by running out to an 8-2 lead to start, before the Cougars stormed back to trail by two, 10-8. The Vikings scored 10 of the game’s next 13 points to lead 20-11, leading to a 25-16 victory. In game three, North Daviess continued to battle despite being one game from the end of their season. The Cougars trailed 10-6 early, eventually taking a 16-15 lead, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings closed the match out with a 25-21 win.
“We played hard other than the second set, where we really struggled,” said North Daviess head coach Rebecca Hays. “Something we have struggled with all year is not pushing and letting teams come back. They really played really, really hard.”
With the Cougars’ backs against the wall in the third game, Hays was very proud of the mettle her team played with as they never gave in to the top ranked Vikings.
“We wanted to win,” Hays said. “Even after they lost two, they figured Barr-Reeve probably thinks they got it, here’s our time to come out and surprise them. They didn’t want to give up.”
The Vikings will have today off to work on some of the things that were lacking in Thursday evening’s win.
“We have a practice tomorrow and we’re going to try to get back to the energy and intensity that the girls have been having all year,” DeCoursey said. “Try to get back to what we do.”
The Vikings face Vincennes Rivet Saturday at 11 a.m. Rivet defeated Shoals in Thursday’s second match.Class A No. 3 Loogootee meets Washington Catholic at 12:30 p.m.
Winners from those matches return for the sectional championship at 7 p.m.
“I know that coming in they have girls that can cause us problems,” DeCoursey said. “We just have to be ready to go.”
