Helmet up for grabs today

WASHINGTON — Homecoming and the battle for the Times Herald Highway 57 Helmet were on tap on Friday as North Daviess and Washington squared off in their annual county rivalry game at Hatchet Hollow.

But Mother Nature had other ideas.

With the game tied 0-0 early in the second quarter, lightening from an approaching caused game officials to delay action for a minimum of 30 minutes. As the lightning became more frequent, coaches and officials from both schools met in the middle of the turf at Hatchet Hollow and elected to postpone the contest until today at 6 p.m.

Action will resume at Hatchet Hollow with Washington (1-2) driving against the North Daviess (1-2) defense. Starting at their own six-yard line late in the first quarter, the Hatchets had reached the ND 13-yard line after a five-yard run by Tyler Edmiston. But the Hatchets were facing a 4th and three when the skies lightened up and play was stopped. The game will pick up where it left off with the Hatchets in possession at the ND 13. Kyle Pfender did most of the damage on the 12-play drive, gaining 47 yards on seven carries. Tyler Edmiston added 43 yards on six carries as the Hatchets stuck to the ground game.

North Daviess took the opening kickoff and ran nearly 11 minutes off the clock with a 21-play, 65-yard drive that ended on downs at the Hatchet five. Cougar running back Colton Lengacher did the heavy lifting for the Cougars on the drive, gaining 43 yards on 11 carries. But the drive stalled at the Hatchet five when back-to-back incomplete passes by Cougar quarterback Brady Helms — including a dropped pass in the end zone on third down that looked like a sure ND touchdown - ended the Cougar drive on downs.
