COUNTY ACCIDENTS

Monday

4:09 p.m. — Shania L. Yokem, 16, Loogootee, was eastbound on CR 700S in her 2005 Chevrolet Equinox when she drove off the south side of the road, striking a grass embankment and REMC pole. The vehicle came to rest facing west. Yokem stated as she crested a hill she was forced off the road near CR 1050E by an oncoming truck pulling a boat.

She was trapped inside the vehicle and complained of pain to her elbow/lower arm. Southwest Medical transported her to Alfordsville, where Air Evac picked her up and flew her to Kosair Hospital in Louisville.

The REMC pole was destroyed. Damage was estimated between $10,000 and $25,000.

Monday

8:06 a.m. — Ritchie L. Hand, 1672W 400S, had been traveling east on SR 645 in his 1989 Honda Prelude when he struck a deer near U.S. 231. He pulled the vehicle off the side of the roadway as far as he could, turned the flashers on and got out to report the accident via his cell phone.

While he was calling, Sara B. Babcock, 27, French Lick, crested a hill in her 2006 Pontiac G6, failed to see his vehicle and struck the rear end.

She stated the sun was in her eyes and she couldn’t see the car, which was partially in the roadway. A witness behind Babcock also said the sun was in his eyes, and he didn’t see the Hand vehicle until Babcock rear-ended it.

Damage was estimated between $1,000 and $2,500.
