Miners bury Cougars

ELNORA — Linton quarterback Austin Karazsia got off to a fast start and the North Daviess defense couldn’t keep up.

The Miners defeated the Cougars, 35-12, at Cougar Valley Friday evening behind three touchdowns from Karazsia and an outstanding effort from their defense.

On the first play from scrimmage, Karazsia connected with Dyllane Deischer on a slant pattern that went for a 64-yard touchdown, giving Linton a 7-0 lead. Two plays later, the Cougars struck back with Colton Lengacher’s 78-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 7-6, the closest the Cougars would be all night.

The Miners scored touchdowns on their next three drives to push their advantage to 28-6 just before halftime.

Linton’s fourth touchdown drive was a 15-play drive that completely quieted the home crowd. On their fifth drive of the game, Karazsia was intercepted on a tipped pass at the Cougars five-yard line by Zach Baker.

“You’ve got to plan to keep their offense off the field or you don’t have a chance, because they’re too fast,” Helms said. “In a 48-minute game if you don’t have the ball for 30 you’re going to get beat pretty bad.”

At halftime, Karazsia had completed 13 of 17 attempts for 244 yards, three touchdowns, and the lone interception. While Karazsia dominated the Cougars defense through two quarters, the Miners also got 62 yards on 10 carries and a touchdown from running back Koye Kaiser. Abram Neff added the final touchdown on an 18-yard touchdown.

After Lengacher’s 78-yard touchdown run on the second drive of the game, Helms said his team just had trouble finding holes.

“We had a very difficult time blocking No. 44 (Dane Rupska), he was a beast,” Helms said. “We couldn’t come off of our double teams and get a piece of him. He was meeting our backs at the line of scrimmage.”

To open the second half the Cougars cut the lead to 28-12 with a 15-play 94-yard touchdown drive with 14 runs and a Brady Helms touchdown pass. Helms said the goal against Linton is always the burn the clock.

“That’s what we’ve been doing all season,” said North Daviess head coach Scotty Helms. “We had a couple of those against Washington and couldn’t cash in. Those are the type of drives we have to have. We don’t have game breakers, we don’t have a whole lot of speed like Linton.”

The 12 points allowed was the most the Miners had allowed since their 58-26 victory at Sullivan on Aug. 24. The loss dropped the Cougars to 2-4. They have lost four of their last five games since their season-opening win against Tecumseh. The Cougars host Wood Memorial next Friday.

“We have to have a better pass rush defensively,” Helms said. “Our pass defense overall is getting better, but we have to get ourselves in better leverage positions on receivers after the catch. Our kids have to understand is we’ll give up those five-yard passes, but for goodness sake be in position to make the
