LOOGOOTEE —
Loogootee did what Washington did not have a chance to do.
The Lions advanced through the opening round of its tennis sectional tournament against Barr-Reeve Wednesday.
But Washington found itself waiting an extra day at Vincennes, as the Vincennes version of the annual fall tournament was delayed a day due to bad weather.
The Hatchets return today to Lincoln to play the hosts at 5 p.m. on courts one through four. Vincennes Rivet and Pike Central will also play after the Wednesday postponement at the same time on courts five through eight.
Vincennes had scheduled its championship for today, but that will now be played between opening round winners at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Lions won all five matches against their Blue Chip Conference rivals.
Gabe Nolley-Waylon Matthews defeated Trevor Steiner-Wyatt Helms, 6-0, 6-1. Hayden Bell-Will Nonte also won at second doubles, topping Colten Lottes-Clay Cummings, 6-1, 6-2.
“Our doubles teams have been our strength all year,” Loogootee coach Rick Graves said. “We’ve had some veteran players there. I thought our number one doubles team played exceptionally well.”
Tyler Booker defeated John Cangelosi at third singles, 6-1, 6-1. But the Vikings turned in better performances at both of the first two singles positions.
Jeff Parsons did drop a 6-3, 6-2 decision to Conner Wittmer. Both sets were close most of the way before Wittmer won.
Tyler Bennett dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Jesse Horney, but that was the last match to end after Parson-Wittmer had finished doing battle.
“I thought our first and second singles players played very well,” Barr-Reeve coach Justin Seal said. “We have a young team this year with only two guys back from last season. I thought the kids played well, I’m very proud of them.”
“I thought Barr-Reeve played very well at both first and second singles,” Graves said. “Our guys were pretty patient. I thought they took their time once they got their jitters out of the way.”
The Lions (15-3) now face Northeast Dubois (15-1) after the Jeeps eliminated Paoli, 4-1, in the opening rounds second match.
Those two play for the sectional championship at 5:30 p.m. today.
“We always have a goal that we want to try and win the sectional every year,” Graves said. “We’re where we want to be.”
At North Daviess, Bloomfield defeated White River Valley, 5-0, in the opening round.
North Daviess now meets Linton at 5 p.m. today in the second round.
Winners of the opening rounds are set to play for Friday’s title.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
