BLOOMINGTON —
The Washington boys soccer team entered the Hoosier Cup looking to add three more victories to their win column, but they were only able to come away with one.
The Hatchets (3-1-4) added their third win of the season and two more ties to their record during Friday and Saturday’s Hoosier Cup in Bloomington against Bloomington North, East Central and No. 7 Ryle (KY) High School.
Following last Tuesday’s 17-0 victory at Mount Vernon, Washington took on Bloomington North to start play Saturday morning. Cullen Arnold scored the game’s only goal in the 23rd minute as the Hatchets would hold on for their third victory of the season, 1-0. The Washington defense held the Cougars to only one shot on goal against goalie Nick Gray.
In their second game of the weekend, the Hatchets quickly fell behind East Central 2-0 in the first 12:51 of play.
Coming out of halftime trailing by that same two-goal margin, Cullen Arnold cut the lead in half with a goal in the 50th minute off an assist from Alex Ruiz. 13 minutes later Blaine Arney tied the game at 2 on an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute, a score that would hold for the final 17 minutes.
In their second game of the day and third of the weekend, the Hatchets played to a 1-1 tie with Ryle High School, their fourth in only eight matches this season. Ryle took the lead with a goal in the 20th minute, a lead they held through halftime. Senior Austin Bush tied the game at one with a goal only 90 seconds after halftime, a score that would hold for the rest of regulation.
The Hatchets welcome Forest Park to the sports complex tonight for their senior night in their final home contest of the 2012 season.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.
