WASHINGTON —
On a day set aside annually by the Daviess County United Way, volunteers give their time and efforts to help United Way agencies complete work on their “wish lists.” That may include painting, power washing, sanding, cleaning gutters, installing ramps, art projects with children, and much more.
This year will be the 17th Annual United Way Day of Caring, and it will soon be here. This remarkable day will start at the Community Building in Eastside Park at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, with a breakfast kickoff. In Odon, volunteers will meet with Julie Watson at 8:30 a.m. at the First National Bank of Odon.
Last year, more than 400 volunteers completed 52 projects for 18 Daviess County agencies and organizations.
Pete Parsons, a chairman who has served nearly 15 years for this community, is still taking great strides to raise the number of volunteers.
“Day of Caring is a day when companies and individuals show their commitment to Daviess County by volunteering to complete projects and jobs for various local not-for-profit agencies,” he said. “It’s a day of people giving of themselves to show others that they are important, people think of others before themselves, and a day when the heart of Daviess County really shows.”
Brenda Sobecki, United Way executive director, feels much like Parsons.
Sobecki has also been involved with Day of Caring for 15 years. She believes the day is an opportunity for volunteers to get a personal view of how our social service agencies work and the people they serve.
To obtain volunteers, the Day of Caring committee asks Daviess County businesses to allow their employees to volunteer for all or part of the day.
Groups will work together on specific projects to get the jobs done. She stated that employers allowing their workers to donate a day to the community increases company pride and community spirit.
“My first anniversary with United Way is August 23rd of this year,” Sobecki said. “In summary, it’s a unique day when young and old, rich and poor, come together for the good of all.”
The idea of having a Day of Caring is not only for the town of Washington, it happens all over the place.
The Daviess County Community Foundation sponsors the event, while lunch is provided by donations.
Anyone wishing to volunteer can easily find out more information by simply calling Brenda Sobecki at 254-1038 or Pete Parsons at 254-1623.

IU still working towards sixth banner
Monday night in Atlanta, Louisville won the school’s first National Championship since the year I was born - 1986. This accomplishment is significant to Indiana basketball fans, because the last two times the Cardinals cut down the nets (1980, 1986), the Hoosiers did it the following year. The stat, of course means nothing, other than both schools had strong programs in the 1980s.

In fan fiction, your favorite characters do what you want them to
When J.J. Abrams took over the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, he boldly went where the series hadn't gone before — romantically — pairing Uhura with Spock. Many fans disliked the change. Some loved it. Others didn't care, because they just wanted to see Kirk and Spock make out.
